About Gerald Edelman

Gerald Maurice Edelman is an American biologist who received a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1972 for his research on the immune system. He discovered that how the components of an immune system evolve in a person’s lifetime is similar to the way the components of the brain evolve in the same period. He is recognized for his theory on consciousness which he defines as “[the] experience of a unitary scene composed variably of sensory responses…memories…situatedness…” (Second Nature, Edelman)
