Monguio served in Spain’s diplomatic service at several posts in Latin America and North Africa until the fall of the Spanish republic in 1939. The year before, he served briefly with the Republican army. He came to the United States, where he taught at Mills College, served in the U.S. army, and permanently joined the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Berkeley in 1957. He is professor emeritus. Trained in law in Spain, Monguio has also studied philosophy, literature, and language there, as well as in France, Italy, and at Berkeley. Among many awards he has received was a Guggenheim Fellowship.
