Jeanne Block is currently working on ego development among children, including cognitive development, cognitive differentiation, and the incorporation of “structures” in personality. Her studies of the constitutional and psychogenic factors in bronchial asthma in children, are regarded as models of well-designed research in the difficult area of psychosomatic disorders, and has significantly changed the course of research in this area. Two major research centers have incorporated basic concepts and techniques from the study at Children’s Hospital by Dr. Block. Her work on the parents of schizophrenic and neurotic children is an important contribution to another important problem in the developmental study of psychopathology. Three of Dr. Block’s articles have been reprinted in important books. “Predicting the behavior of children under frustration” is a classical study and has been replicated by others and is frequently cited. Dr. Block has served extensively as a consultant on research and programs: to the Children’s Hospital of the East Bay, the Kaiser Foundation Hospital, the Palo Alto Medical Research Foundation, the Palo Alto Research Institute, the San Leandro Public Schools, and the State of California Departments of Public Health and Alcoholic Rehabilitation.
